Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is an arcade located near the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, Italy. It was named after King Vittorio Emanuelle II of Italy. It was built by the Italian architect Giuseppe Mengoni from 1865 to 1877. A glass dome covers part of the area, with mosaic design throughout the floor.
The Galleria is a common named used today by shopping malls all over the world. It was derived from the Italian word Galleria, which means gallery or arcade. It was first popularized by the Galleria Vittorio in Milan. It typically refers to enclosed shopping malls, and other modern shopping malls today still follow the basic principles of the Galleria Vittorio.
The Galleria has a massive assortment of shops, which sell various items. Common shops that can be found here are fashion shops and book shops. Designer brands such as Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton have a strong presence in the area. Other types of stores that can be seen are restaurants, cafes and bars. Most of the shops and stores located here are considered high end.
Two famous Milan landmarks are located beside the Galleria, the Duonmo and the Teatro Alla Scala. The Duonmo, of also known as the Milan Cathedral which is a church located in Lombardy. The Archbishop of Milan is seated at this church and it is one of the world's largest churches. Its style is that of Gothic architecture and the church is known for strongly propagating the ideals of Christianity, including its traditions and worship. It also has a strong musical presence. There are many statues throughout the church grounds including that of Napoleon located at one of the spires.
The roof of the cathedral is available for the public to see. There are sculpture displays as well as architectural designs such as pinnacles and spires that can be viewed. There is a small admission fee for visitors and tourists.
In the cathedral itself are plenty of monuments and works of art. One such display is the sarcophagus of the Archbishop Alberto da Intimiano. Other archbishop sarcophaguses include the ones of Ottone Visconti, Marco Carelli and Giovanni Visconti. The works of the Italian sculptor Pellegrino Pellegrini can also be seen here. He built famous altars such as that of St. Peter and St. Agatha. Perhaps the most famous of the works of art displayed is the statue of Saint Bartholomew.
The Teatro alla Scla, also known as La Scala, is a famous opera house. The operating season of the theater typically starts on December 7, which coincides with St. Ambrose's Day. A rule closely followed in the theater is that no one is allowed to enter if a performance has already started.
Another such rule is that all shows must end before midnight. Part of the theater is the La Scala Museum. Inside is a host of paintings, statues and costumes related to the history of the La Scala. The Academy of Performing Arts is also located inside. It is a place where musicians and dancers alike can master their craft.
